Seattle Sounders: Starting the Season with a Kick

Seattle Side Up Abraham Profile PicThe Seattle Sounders FC coming off a 2014 Supporter Shield season, took it to the Eastern Conference Champs, the New England Revolution 3-0.

Sunday night’s match was the season opener for both teams, and by the score, we could tell who was more prepared for the season.

Both teams were without their star mid-fielders.   Lee Nguyen who scored 18 goals for the Revolution (team record), was out with a groin injury.  The Sounders 3 times MLS All-Star Osvaldo Alonso (Honey Badger), was also out for this game.

The injuries awash, the Sounders punished the Revolution on the edge and in the middle.  Beautiful runs after runs were accomplished by the Sounders striker tandem of Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins.

In the 25th minute, Clint Dempsey was awarded a spot kick after a hard foul by New England’s Juan Agudelo.  Good old Duece (Dempsey) fired a shot past the diving goalie, Bobby Shuttleworth, for the 1st goal of the game.

In the 41st minute, after a great run by Sounders newcomer Tyrone Mear down the right field line, who sent a cross to Obafemi Martins for a stunning header from 6 yards out.

The final goal came in 67th minute.  The team work of Marco Pappa, Martins, and Dempsey made fools of the shellshocked Revolution defenders.  Quick one-touch passes and a brilliant through pass kept the defenders guessing and an unmarked Dempsey received the final pass, and walked it into the goal uncontested.

What Worked

Everything worked and it worked often.

The defense held strong as the Revolution had only 1 shot on target with 8 shots on goal.

It was good to see that the loss of the Honey Badger did not severely impact the defense, as #6 has been the key pivot to defense and the counter-attack.   In the past, good counter-attack teams (RSL and Galaxy) have beaten up the Sounders in games he was missing.  Today, the Sounders seemed to do fine in his absense.

What Didn’t Work

Very few complaints, but if we are nitpicking, the Sounders had 16 fouls.  Perhaps this is an indicator of early season kinks that need to be worked on.
