Seattle Mariners Recap: Mariners take a broom to the A’s, Sweep City!

Posted by

athleticsWell goodness me, the Seattle Mariners (66-71) are looking quite the juggernaut of late, having taken a series from the Houston Astros, and now sweeping the Oakland Athletics.  The hometown 9 seems to have a bit of fight left in them, now that much maligned GM Jack Zduriencik has been kicked to the curb.  One wonders had the M’s removed Jackie Z earlier in the year would the M’s be in contention winning games when it mattered?

Game 1

Oakland came out guns a blaze, roughing up rookie Edgar Olmos for 5 runs.  The Mariners sent a succession of relievers into the game (some doing better than others) to try and stop the bleeding.  But as shaky as the M’s pitching looked, a hitting barrage by the likes of Ketel Marte, Brad Miller, and Logan Morrison beat the Athletics into submission with extra fireworks supplied by Stefan Romero and Kyle Seager via the Home Run.

Game 2

This was a day in which King Felix was definitely his usual dominant self.  Oddly enough, the Mariners offense continued their offensive assault to power 14 hits to secure Felix Hernandez’s 16th win of the year.   Sky Rockets took flight as Logan Morrison and Shawn OMalley launched moonshot homeruns, from there, the M’s never looked back.

Game 3

The cellar dwelling A’s finally put together a fine pitching performance, unfortunately for them, Hisashi Iwakuma pitched better.  Giving up only 1 run in almost 7 innings, Iwakuma put his foot on the throats of the A’s while an uncharacteristically scrappy M’s squad strung together hits and took advantage of walks and poor defense by the A’s.
