Seattle Mariners Recap: Bullpen Struggles Continue versus the Chi-Sox, Mariners Lose 2 of 3

The feeling all Mariners have felt all season long.

This weekend saw another disappointing outcome for the Mariners, as they dropped 2 out of 3 at home to the White Sox.   Pitching was again the issue, as Felix was roughed up a bit and the bullpen continued its dismal season.  On the bright side, Fernando Rodney was let go.  Let’s take a look at the games.

Game 1

Friday’s game saw a dream pitching matchup heading in between Felix and Chris Sale. Felix did not have his best stuff, however, as he gave up 4 runs over his 6 innings. Sale meanwhile, struck out 14 in dominant fashion until Mark Trumbo finally got to him in the 7th with a 3 run HR. At the time, this closed the gap to 1 run at the time, but the bullpen proceeded to implode for 7 runs over the next 2 innings and the Mariners lost 11-4.

Game 2

Saturday saw a pretty good start from Vidal Nuno as he went 6 2/3 and only gave up one run. Unfortunately a rough outing from the usually consistent Carson Smith spoiled this one. The Mariners went into the 9th inning with a 3-1 lead. Smith came in to close it out but gave up 2 runs in the 9th to tie it up. Farquhar came in the 10th, and with the help of some bad defense, assured the win for the White Sox in the 10th with a 3 run inning. The Sox went on to win 6-3 in 10

Game 3

Sunday’s game saw the Mariners light up the scoreboard a bit, as they got to John Danks for 7 runs. They were able to survive a tough 5 run 6th inning from Taijuan Walker, and manager Lloyd McClendon decided to mix things up in the bullpen, having Carson Smith face some tough righties in the 7th and 8th innings and by allowing Tom Wilhelmsen to close it out. The Mariners ended up able to pull off a tight one 8-6.

SSU Player of the Series:

Robinson Cano continued his too late amazing second half.  He had a homer in the series and is hitting almost .400 this week to get the player of the series nod.

Next Side Up:

The Mariners are off to Oakland for a series against the A’s.  Both teams are at the bottom of the division so it should be a good matchup.
