Your American League West leading Seattle Mariners (16-11) are the new up and comer in Major League Baseball. The Houston Astros (10-18) had enjoyed being the hot, young, fresh new team for the last couple of years, but a disastrous start has seen these Astros unable to get out of their own way. As hosts of the 4 game series, Houston looks to dig their way out of the cellar.
The M’s are set to clash with the Astros at Minute Maid Park for a four game series. This is the second clash this season between the two teams, the first series was taken by the M’s as a part of a streak by Seattle–where they have won 6 series in a row.
Robinson Cano loves Texas home cooking
Robinson Cano is a terror to Houston pitching. Cano’s .350 average in 52 games versus Houston is his highest against any AL team. The last series against Houston, Cano hit 5-12 with 2 home runs and 10 RBI. Houston would do well to steer clear of the Superstar 2nd baseman.

Houston finally finding their stride
The Astros have finally mounted a bit of a winning streak. Houston recently took a home series vs Minnesota. Jose Altuve, Jason Castro, and Carlos Corea powered the Astros to a 16-4 drubbing over the Twins, each of them had a home run and Astros fans are hoping that game is the end of a horrendous April.
“Now we just look to carry that momentum,” Castro said. “It will be good moving forward to have a couple of wins under our belt moving into the rest of the homestand.”
Key Matchup: Jose Altuve vs Wade Miley
Seattle pitcher Wade Miley is coming off his first career shutout win; it is possible Miley has turned things around as he is 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA over his last 2 starts. This bodes well for M’s fans who witnessed a disastrous start where he went 0-2 with an 8.04 ERA in his first three starts. In four career starts vs Houston, Miley has gone 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA.
“I think he’s understanding who he is,” manager Scott Servais said. “Wade is very aggressive by nature and he wants to attack almost too much.”
Conversely, Houston 2nd baseman Jose Altuve likes hitting against Miley. Altuve has gone is 7 for 12 with three doubles vs Miley. Altuve has fantasy stats, where he averages .306 on the year, with 10 steals, and 8 home runs. However, with the 8 home runs, Altuve has only 17 RBI. What that tells us, is that even though he is a Dynamo, no one on his team is getting on base for him to drive in—and hopefully for the M’s that continues.
Look for your Seattle Mariners to continue their streak, taking 3 of 4 from the Astros this week. Game 2 starter will be started by the former Mariner Doug Fister, and I expect him to try and make his old team look a bit the fool. Also look for Dae-ho Lee to get more at bats this series and look to continue his hot bat.
